Benefits

Benefits of Massage

Reduce Anxiety and Stress

Stress and anxiety can affect anyone in today’s busy world. Relaxation is induced by remedial massage, which reduces stress and anxiety. It relieves muscular tension and promotes relaxation and general wellbeing.

Stimulates Blood Flow

Stimulating blood supply in the body increases joint mobility and tissue regeneration. A remedial massage will get the blood flowing through congested areas, which over time will increase circulation. You can experience improved body function and lowered blood pressure by flushing lactic acid from the muscles.

Relieve Recurring Musculoskeletal Pain

Remedial massage addresses the immediate pain and discomfort and its underlying cause. Remedial massage treatments can be incredibly beneficial in reducing and managing recurrent pain and preventing further injuries.

Helps Improve Posture

A lack of physical exercise, improper workstation setup, and sitting at the computer all day can lead to posture problems. A tightening of muscles in the postural areas can lead to back and neck tension. Massage loosens muscles in the neck, shoulders and lower back.

Promote Better Sleep

Maintaining your health and wellbeing requires a good night’s rest. A good night’s sleep is crucial to our physical health and mental wellbeing. Physical injury or muscle tightness and pain can lead to a poor sleep, which remedial massage can help alleviate.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's About Remedial Massage

Most people associate massage with only one style of massage. They are unaware that there are many different massage options that can help them in different ways. There are two common types of massage: relaxation massage and remedial massage.

Relaxation massage or Swedish massage

The benefits of a relaxation massage are vast. It’s no wonder it has become popular. This less specific form of physical therapy can provide slight pain relief compared to remedial massage. However, it still provides very therapeutic effects on both your mental state as well emotional health with its calming and stress relieving effects.

Relaxation massage technique typically involves flowing strokes and kneading at your desired pressure. There is no pain involved with this therapy, and it’s an effective way to relax the mind and body. By stimulating the lymphatic system, this light massage promotes general relaxation, encourages blood flow throughout the body, and boosts the immune system. The benefits of this are that it allows the body to catch up and recharge after a stressful week. Our massage therapists give the dreamiest relaxation massages – and these are perfect to give to someone special by way of a Gift Voucher which you can purchase from us.

Remedial massage

The purpose of remedial massage is to help heal the body. The aim of this style of massage is to target pain, structural dysfunctions and assist in the rehabilitation of injured individuals holistically (a whole body approach).

Our remedial massage therapists and physiotherapists use assessments and tests to determine what structures are causing your pain or postural dysfunction. In most cases, muscular pain, such as lower back pain, is caused by weak muscles, overactive muscles, or compensatory muscles. Upon finding the source of your pain/discomfort, your remedial massage therapist will then focus the massage on targeting the soft tissue that are causing the pain in your body. In contrast to most relaxation massages, remedial massages are individually tailored to the client.

The techniques used in remedial massage focus on specific muscle groups. Trigger point therapy, PNF stretching, myofascial release, and muscle stripping are some techniques used. The pressure in remedial massage can be deeper and firmer than in relaxation massage, but the pressure is always within the client’s preference.

Any individual suffering from muscle tension or chronic or acute pain will benefit from a remedial massage, such as those with lower back, neck pain, or entire body aches! Similar to relaxation massage, remedial massage stimulates blood flow throughout the body and aids in detoxification of the lymphatic system.

A remedial massage is not simply a painful massage. There is a great deal of misunderstanding concerning remedial massage, even to the point where some clients confuse it with aggressive deep tissue massage, due to inexperienced therapists and “no pain – no gain” attitudes. Having an effective remedial massage may cause a minor amount of discomfort and soreness, but these effects should be temporary, kept to a minimum, and should only occur if the situation calls for it.

A number of factors and preferences determine how often one should get a remedial massage. Furthermore, lifestyle factors will vary depending on the individual, and this will affect how often remedial massage would be recommended.

A New Injury (Acute):
It is usually possible to manage a new injury or pain presentation within one to two remedial massage sessions, with the most effective results being achieved if the sessions are spaced out 5 -10 days apart. Consecutive sessions are recommended for best results.

Long-standing Conditions (Chronic):
In contrast, a long-term condition may require several treatments to return the area to balance and normal functioning. Chronic conditions that have stayed dysfunctional for a longer period of time, may require a longer amount of time to correct. In addition, chronic pain has many areas involved due to compensation patterns, so resolving pain or muscle tightness may require several massage appointments.

For those who suffer from long-term conditions, it is recommended to receive remedial massage regularly, which can be gradually decreased in frequency until they reach a maintenance stage. Discuss with your physio or massage therapist what will work for you best.

Maintenance Massage:
Ideally, a maintenance massage should be performed on a regular basis. Maintenance massage is usually recommended quarterly or monthly (around 4 – 12 massages per year). In order to prevent painful or problematic conditions, regular remedial massage can promote mobility, strength, and improved soft tissue function.

In Australia, certified remedial massage therapists have done high levels or qualifications and experience compared to massage therapists or masseuses you find at day spas or shopping centres. At Archer St Physiotherapy Centre, our Remedial Massage Therapists and Physiotherapists are highly certified and we offer affordable pricing for 30min, 45min, 60min and 90min long massages. Please contact the clinic for further pricing information, as you may be able to receive a rebate from your private health insurance fund.

During the remedial massage, the therapist will assess your movement and discomfort to develop a management plan that will assist the area of complaint to help restore full function. Remedial massage will not only focus on the area of concern but also address other conditions that may be contributing to the discomfort or pain. This will ensure the long-term success of the treatment and reduce the chances of injury recurrence.

Massages may make you feel sore afterwards which is a normal expectation. During the process, blood and nutrients are delivered to your muscles while toxins are eliminated. You may experience delayed onset muscle soreness after stimulating muscles that you don’t typically use. This is a normal reaction as your body adjusts to being manipulated in a certain way, similar to how your body gets used to working out.

Your first massage may cause you to feel some soreness afterwards if you have not had one recently. Regular massages will create muscle memory, so schedule your sessions regularly. Your therapist will recommend some ways to minimise post-massage soreness.

In myotherapy and remedial massage, your therapist must review your medical history and how you were injured. To determine which type of massage therapy is appropriate, our therapists will assess your range of motion and postural alignment. Management might involve deep tissue massage, myofascial tensioning, cupping, and trigger point techniques.

Deep tissue massage
A deep tissue massage focuses on aligning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. The method works by breaking down adhesions in your muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Massage therapy of this type could relieve tension, promote mobility, and improve healing outcomes. You could also use deep tissue massage to address specific muscle tension, spasms, or pain. This type of massage usually uses slower strokes than traditional massage therapy, concentrating on problem areas and applying deeper and firmer pressure.

Myofascial tensioning
In myofascial tensioning, the connective tissue that holds your muscular system in place is released. A tight fascia can prevent your muscles from moving correctly if you’ve been injured. This could result in toxins building up, worsening your pain and limiting your range of movement.

Cupping
Massage therapists may also use cupping to treat injuries. To increase blood circulation and release toxins from the muscles, plastic, silicon, or glass cups are applied to the skin to create a vacuum effect over the tissue, drawing blood to the area. This modality may leave painless, circle shaped ‘bruise-like’ marks on your body for several days post treatment.

Trigger points
Massage therapists may use trigger-point techniques to treat injuries. There are small clusters of muscle fibres known as trigger points or ‘knots’, which can be caused by injury or other factors such as poor diet and poor posture.Through direct pressure and release movements, the therapist can improve blood flow to the area and assist the trigger point in relaxing and softening.

Deep tissue massage is a massage technique used primarily to treat musculoskeletal issues, such as strains and sports injuries. Slow, deep strokes are applied to the muscles and connective tissues to target the inner layers.

Following a deep tissue massage, some soreness is not unusual to linger for one to several days. A heat pack or hot compress can help soothe soreness, and it is recommended to remain hydrated. Although massage therapy is generally safe, deep tissue massage uses very firm pressure and may not be suitable for everyone. Discuss which style of remedial massage is best for you, with your therapist.

Massage therapy reduces inflammation in heavily stressed muscles. Many people use massage therapy to reduce pain and promote recovery after an injury. Massage may reduce pain by reducing inflammation, improving blood flow, and reducing tissue stiffness and should not make anything worse.
